Kumana National Park, located in the south-east corner of Sri Lanka, is famous for its avifauna, particularly its migratory water birds. Covering over 35,000 hectares, the park features the Kumana Villu—a natural mangrove swamp lake that attracts nesting birds during May and June.
A Paradise for Bird Watchers
Over 255 species of birds have been recorded in Kumana. You can see painted storks, spoonbills, pelicans, white ibis, and herons nesting in large numbers.
Safari Tips
Hire a half-day safari jeep from Arugam Bay or nearby beach towns. Ensure you carry high-quality binoculars and telephoto camera lenses for the best bird captures.
